Exploring Edcafe AI

During tonight's class, I learned about Edcafe AI, a digital tool designed to help educators create custom chatbots for their classrooms. I had not heard of this tool before Group 4’s presentation. Their demo of Edcafe was informative and it highlighted the program's practical, accessible, and relevant features. I learned that Edcafe AI is a platform that enables teachers to create AI-powered chatbots tailored to specific educational needs, such as mathematics or science.

One of the most meaningful takeaways of Group 4's presentation to me was the idea that chatbots could serve as learning companions, particularly for students who may feel hesitant to ask questions in class or who need additional support outside of school hours. This concept resonated with me because it highlights how technology can foster a more inclusive and responsive learning environment (e.g., adaptive learning). 

I took away several key insights from the presentation. First, Edcafe AI is accessible, even for educators with limited technical experience. Second, the platform is customizable, allowing educators to tailor the chatbot to subjects, grade level, and teaching styles. Lastly, the tool is student-centred, designed to interact with students and adapt based on their input. (Edcafe, n.d.).

Throughout this course, I was introduced to a variety of digital tools that I had never encountered before, each offering unique ways to enhance teaching and learning. This course reminded me of the importance of collaborative learning and highlighted several digital tools that can aid in this process. I found that this course broadened my understanding of how technology can be used not just to automate tasks, but to foster engagement, personalize learning, and create more inclusive educational environments. As I continue my educational journey, I am excited to explore how these tools can complement traditional teaching methods and support the diverse needs of students.

Reflecting on My Journey During the COVID-19 Pandemic

I was hired as an assistant professor at the University of Toronto at the same time as the world was facing an unprecedented global pandemic.  I was a course coordinator for the first course in the medication therapy management (MTM) laboratory series. T he faculty was rethinking and adapting their teaching methods for virtual learning. Reflecting on Problems of Practice Presentations

This week’s class was engaging as each small group presented their problem of practice related to educational technology integration and innovation. It was fascinating to see the diversity in the chosen topics and how each group approached their presentation. In fact, w hat stood out most to me was how each group interpreted the task differently. This highlighted that there is no single right way to approach the assignment. Similar to technology, innovation occurs with diversity and experimentation. There was an added layer of creativity achieved in the class, thanks to the variety of digital tools used to incorporate an interactive element into the presentations.
